What You Need to Know Before Nose Surgery

Your nose is the centerpiece of your face, so if you’re unhappy with it, your self-esteem can take a dive. Nose surgery, otherwise known as rhinoplasty or a “nose job,” corrects the shape and contour of your nose to complement your other features and bring greater balance to your face.

Nose Aesthetics

There are many common complaints patients have with their noses. Even tiny misshapen lumps or uneven contours can affect your entire facial appearance. Nose surgery can correct all of these issues and even correct breathing problems.

Some aspects of nose aesthetics that patients often discuss are:

  • Size
  • Width
  • Bumps
  • Crooked tip
  • Unevenness

Nose surgery can reshape your nose to get rid of unsightly lumps and crooked bone structures. In some cases, surgeons also change the nose’s angle and narrow the nostrils for an improved appearance.

Types of Nose Surgery

The term “nose surgery” covers three different procedures. Depending on the issues you have with your nose, you may need one of these three procedures:

  • Open rhinoplasty
  • Closed rhinoplasty
  • Revision rhinoplasty

Your surgeon will assess your nose, discuss your aesthetic goals, and help you determine which procedure best suits you.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty is the traditional “nose surgery.” During this external reshaping procedure, your surgeon will make an incision across the front of your nostrils. From there, your surgeon will rearrange the soft tissues and cartilage (and bone if necessary) to reshape your nose.

Open rhinoplasty is the least invasive rhinoplasty option. If you have superficial problems that can be solved without deep incisions, your surgeon will choose this procedure. It does not work as well for noses with major bone structure issues, such as bumps.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed rhinoplasty is an internal cosmetic procedure. In a closed rhinoplasty, your surgeon will reshape your nasal anatomy from inside your nostrils. They will rearrange the tissues, cartilage, and bone to give your nose the desired shape and width. This procedure is ideal for noses that have internal structural problems.

Revision Rhinoplasty

If you have had a previous nose surgery but are unhappy with the results, this procedure is for you. You may desire a different aesthetic now, or perhaps your nose surgery was botched in some way.

Find a highly qualified, facial plastic surgeon who can reconstruct and repair surgical issues from previous rhinoplasties to improve the look and function of your nose.

Positive Self-Image

Many patients report higher satisfaction with their overall appearance after rhinoplasty. This surgery can be life-changing! If you struggle with loving your facial appearance, primarily because of your nose, rhinoplasty might be a good choice for you.

Everyone deserves to love the reflection looking back in the mirror. If your nose is causing you to struggle with confidence and a positive self-image, it is time to make a change.
