NeoGraft vs. Topical or Oral Hair Restoration Treatments

Hair loss can be frustrating. Even though it’s just hair, a receding hairline or bald spot can affect your quality of life by making you feel and appear older.

If you’re experiencing hair loss, Legacy Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics has hair restoration treatment options available to you.

NeoGraft is one of the leading treatments for hair loss, utilizing cutting-edge technology. Here’s why we recommend NeoGraft over topical or oral hair restoration methods:

Topical Hair Restoration Treatments

Topical hair restoration treatments use solutions that are applied to your scalp and gently massaged into your skin.

These treatments can take some time to show results since they work by stimulating your natural hair growth cycle.

What Is Minoxidil?

Minoxidil is one of the most well-known topical treatments. It’s the main ingredient in the commonly used product, Rogaine.

Minoxidil is a vasodilator, which means it widens the blood vessels at the treatment sites to deliver more oxygen-rich blood to your hair follicles.

Minoxidil can help increase the size of your hair follicles, which in turn promotes thicker, stronger hair growth.

What Are Some Problems with Minoxidil?

Minoxidil may be a good treatment option for some patients, but it has some flaws and inconveniences.

For one thing, minoxidil takes several months to see results – and that’s if you even see results. Many people who try minoxidil do not see the hair growth results they have hoped for.

Oral Hair Restoration Treatments

Oral hair restoration treatments include medications like biotin. Biotin is a B vitamin that helps with the growth and maintenance of your skin, nails, and hair.

The problem with oral hair restoration treatments is, like topical treatments, they take several months to see results. In addition, some people do not see any results at all.

Surgical Hair Transplants

For the most reliable hair restoration results, we recommend exploring surgical hair transplants.

There are two main types of surgical hair transplants: follicular unit excision and follicular unit transplantation.

Follicular Unit Transplantation

With follicular unit transplantation (FUT), a surgeon cuts a strip of skin from either the side or back of your head and manually extracts individual hair follicles.

These extracted hair follicles are then implanted into balding areas of your scalp. The follicles grow in their new location, giving you a fuller head of hair.

Follicular Unit Excision with NeoGraft

Many patients find that follicular unit excision (FUE) procedures like NeoGraft are less invasive and more comfortable than FUT treatments.

NeoGraft is a type of hair transplantation technique that relies on follicular unit excision. It is one of the most cutting-edge hair implantation methods, and it is noted to be more effective than other follicular unit excision treatments.

What Is NeoGraft?

NeoGraft is a semi-automated version of follicular unit excision.

During a traditional follicular unit excision hair transplant, your surgeon removes individual hair follicles from either the sides or back of your head.

Then, they will make incisions in your scalp in the balding sections before actually implanting the new hairs.

With the NeoGraft technique, we remove your hair follicles with a wand. The wand extracts the hair follicles with suction. We don’t make manual incisions for the new follicles. Instead, we use the NeoGraft tool to make the incisions and perform implantation.

Because the NeoGraft tool functions under the guidance and direction of our plastic surgeon, it is considered semi-automated.

Benefits of NeoGraft

NeoGraft is known for reducing the amount of damage to hair follicles when compared to manual FUE treatments. This, in turn, improves the overall survival rate of the transplanted hairs.

There are generally few complications with NeoGraft since it is a minimally invasive technique. NeoGraft doesn’t require any staples or stitches.

NeoGraft is also quicker than traditional, manual FUE. With traditional follicular unit excision, procedures can sometimes take multiple days. With NeoGraft, the procedure usually takes anywhere from four to ten hours, depending on the number of grafts needed.

What Happens During NeoGraft?

The procedure may vary slightly depending on your particular needs. However, during your NeoGraft procedure, you can expect a few general stages.

We will begin by shaving either your entire head or just the section of your scalp where the hair follicles will be transplanted.

A local anesthetic will be applied to your scalp. We may even offer a mild sedative to enhance your comfort and relaxation.

Using the NeoGraft tool, we will then extract the donated hair follicles. Then, we will implant the hair follicles into the balding areas on your scalp using NeoGraft.

Are You a Candidate for NeoGraft?

You’re most likely a candidate for NeoGraft if:

  • You do not have high blood pressure or certain blood clotting conditions
  • You do not have unmanaged diabetes
  • You’re older than age 25
  • You have thick hair fibers
  • You have hair loss along your hairline
  • Your hair loss isn’t caused by medication or stress

The best way to determine whether you are a candidate for a NeoGraft hair transplant is to book a consultation with our skilled providers.

Recovering from NeoGraft

Because NeoGraft is minimally invasive, the recovery process is faster than other hair transplant methods.

Most patients can resume their regular routines merely days post-procedure. We will offer specific recommendations and expectations about post-op care tailored to your body, lifestyle, and procedure.

NeoGraft Hair Restoration with Legacy Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics
