Microneedling – Everything You Need to Know

There are many skin rejuvenation techniques out there. They don’t all have the same purpose, but it can still be overwhelming when deciding what treatment would work best for you. What Is Microneedling and What Does It Treat?

Microneedling, as the name implies, is a treatment that uses tiny needles to stimulate collagen production. During this process, we will inflict tiny wounds on the surface of your skin with a handheld device. Microneedling makes use of your body’s own healing ability to ease the effects of certain skin conditions, like acne. Microneedling can be used for the following:

  • Produce collagen
  • Tighten pores
  • Reduce the appearance of scars
  • Fade hyperpigmentation

The Benefits of Microneedling Treatments

When these tiny needles create tiny wounds in your skin, they trigger your cells to produce more collagen. Collagen aids the elasticity and firmness of your skin. The microneedling treatment forces your skin to start healing itself, which leads to tightening and the reduction of wrinkles and fine lines.

It is the increased production of collagen that aids the smoothing of acne scars and reduction of pore size. When your skin is forced to start the healing process, it can also help with skin texture and color.

The Process – From Start to Finish

The goal of microneedling is to have smoother, healthier skin. However, you must follow all the instructions that your doctor gives you before, during, and after the procedure if you want to achieve the desired results. From the first consultation to the recovery period, we are here to shed light on the process.

Your First Consultation

One of the most important steps is the first consultation with your doctor where you discuss your desired results and the procedure. This is the time when you inform your doctor about any pre-existing skin conditions you may have or medication you may be taking. Be sure to tell your doctor about any other skin care treatments you plan to have, so you can ensure that they won’t clash with your microneedling treatment. Waxing or laser hair removal may irritate your skin, prolonging the healing process. This is also the right time to ask questions so you can be comfortable with the process.

Prepare for the Treatment

This treatment is going to cause minor trauma to your skin, so you should be gentle with your skin the week before the treatment session. Refrain from using exfoliants and harsh products that may irritate your skin. This is not the time to try out that new skincare or makeup product. Drink enough water so you can keep your skin healthy and hydrated. Avoid doing other skin care treatments 3 days before and after the microneedling session.

The Treatment

Before your microneedling session, remove makeup and other skincare products. Your face needs to be bare and clear. If you are afraid of needles, you can ask your doctor to apply a topical anesthetic to the treatment area. However, most patients do not find this necessary as the microneedling process is relatively painless. You may also ask for numbing cream if you wish.

The treatment should take about one hour, depending on the area being treated. If you are using a numbing cream, you will have to wait an additional 45 minutes for the numbing sensation to set in.

Do not be concerned if your skin should bleed slightly or become red during the treatment. This is a normal part of the procedure and usually means that the needles are at the right depth in your skin. Your doctor will apply a soothing serum after the procedure to reduce swelling and redness.

Recovery After the Treatment

If you opted for numbing cream, you should expect the full sensation in your face to return 2 hours after the procedure. There is no downtime for microneedling, so you can resume daily activities after the treatment. Your skin may be slightly red and sensitive but should return to normal in 1-2 days. Full healing may take up to 3 days. Once again, avoid harsh skin care products, such as exfoliants and makeup. You should also avoid extended exposure to the sun.

You can resume your usual skincare routine as soon as the redness and swelling subside. Continue to drink plenty of water and keep your skin moisturized after the treatment. In fact, this is the perfect time to nourish your skin, as it will readily absorb products. If you have another skincare treatment planned, ask your doctor how long you should wait after your microneedling session.

When Will You See Results?

There should be an immediate improvement in the appearance and texture of your skin. However, scarring and wrinkles may only show improvement after 3-4 sessions, 4 weeks apart.

Your doctor may recommend a treatment to help maintain the results and keep your skin looking radiant and healthy. Follow these instructions closely to get the most out of your microneedling treatment.
